 THE ULTRA CYCLE

the story so far.....

The Ultra Cyclists are a group of adventurers who take on an ultra cycling challenge every year for charity. Since 2016, they have completed 6,723 km over 5 different cycles in just 18 days in 5 different countries, while raising an incredible €172,456 for various local and national charities.

More recent cycles have been; Mizen to Malin Head, Lands End to John o' Groats, Lourdes to Knock and the 32 Counties of Ireland. Whilst doing these ultra cycles, they are using the opportunity to raise much-needed funds for many deserving charities namely; Down Syndrome Ireland West, Mayo Roscommon Hospice, Temple street, children’s hospital, Turn2me.ie, Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, Western care, Northwest Simon Community and Pieta House.

What started out as a pursuit of amusement among friends has now evolved into something greater than themselves. These ventures were entirely self-funded, all the flights, the tents, the bikes, the food, the accommodation, the boat fares, renting the campervan, the gear, the signs, every element involved in these charitable cycle’s were funded by the people taking part.

The sacrifice on time spent with family and work-related commitments should also be recognised, as the cyclists involved in this event would often begin their training during the week as early as 4:30am and cycle up to 300km per week. There were many weekends totally dedicated towards the logistical planning, organising fundraising, interviews, scheduling flights and ferries and so much more.

In recent years The Ultra Cyclists have been recognised for their enormous efforts. They are the 2020 Mayo Association Dublin Meitheal Award Winners and The Rehab Care Groups Mayo People of the Year.

The Ultra Cyclists would like to take the opportunity to thank all who have donated to date, their wives & families for their support, fellow cyclists, virtual fans and last but not least their support team who will be at their beck and call for the whole journey.

ALAN HEANEY

Cycle Organiser

The Ultra Cycle is organised and led by Alan Heaney from Swinford, Co. Mayo. Alan is the co-founder and owner of Efficient Farm Solutions and Lely Centre Mullingar. Alan spends hours cycling the roads of Mayo, Galway & Sligo getting the long miles of preparation for these huge challenges. Typical training sessions entail 75 - 150km spins, early morning and late evening. We do this 3 times per week to condition the bodies and build up miles in the legs.

He has been joined by fellow co-owner of EFS/Lely Centre Mullingar, Niall McGauran on many trips and both are big advocates of raising much needed funds for local charities through these ultra-cycling events.

“We are very appreciative of all the support from our Suppliers, industry colleagues, donators, and our customers from the farming community who have supported us along the way. We look forward to our upcoming cycle in August 2022, hen we will embark on a 1,100 km, 4 day cycle along the memorable and picturesque 'Ancient East', along the east coast of Ireland” concludes Alan Heaney.
