Mizen to Malin Head 2016

  MIZEN TO MALIN HEAD

600km | 2 Days | 2016

It all started in June of 2016, when members of the Swinford cycling club decided they were going to cycle from Mizen in Cork to Malin Head in Donegal, a journey of 600km over a 3-day period. The intention of the cycle was to bring awareness and raise funds for a local young girl named Laura Skeffington from Killasser, Swinford, Co. Mayo who suffers from VACTERL Association.

As they arrived at the finish line, Alan Heaney, Gerry Boots and Gary Smyth discussed a possibility of attempting to do the event in two days. In September of the same year, Alan and Gary set off from Cork with a restless ambition. Joining them would be other cyclists of similar passion – Conor Jordan, Pat Bilbow, Colm Carney, Gary Bigley, and Johnathan Verry. Together, they would embark on the first of their journey’s which repeatedly saw them turning ambitious dreams into realities. Despite the terrible weather conditions of rain and high winds that faced them from the start, especially on day 1, they pushed on towards Donegal and achieved their targets. The combined donations for both the 3-day and 2-day challenge came to a total of €13,355.
